Choose a photo cleaner for the job you actually have.

Start with Apple Photos for detected duplicates and simple manual deletion. Consider a dedicated cleaner when you want similar-shot review, swiping, or a focused cleanup plan.

How this comparison was made

This guide is written by Mohamed Elatabany, the developer of Photo Cleaner: Swipe & Delete, so it has a commercial interest. It compares task fit using each app’s own listing and documentation, checked October 2026. It is not a performance benchmark, a ranking, or a guarantee about the amount of storage any app will recover.

Make the choice in three steps

  1. Identify the task. Sorting albums, finding repeated shots, and freeing local storage are different jobs.
  2. Try the built-in Photos collections and inspect Settings → General → iPhone Storage. A cluttered grid does not always mean Photos is your biggest storage problem.
  3. If you need a dedicated review flow, try a small session before committing to a purchase. Check that you can understand what is marked for removal and review it before deletion.

For a personal plan and deliberate swipe decisions, Photo Cleaner: Swipe & Delete is worth evaluating. For organizing kept photos into albums, Slidebox may be a closer fit. For a detected-duplicates problem alone, Apple Photos may be enough.

Start with the cleanup planner to compare the estimated file bytes in the photos, screenshots, and videos you are considering removing.

Safety applies whichever app you choose

Maintain a separate copy of irreplaceable media. iCloud Photos is a synced library: removing a photo also removes it from other synced devices. Recently Deleted usually provides a 30-day recovery window, unless you permanently remove the item earlier. Keep that window when possible.

Do not choose a cleaner based on claims that it will boost battery life, erase system caches, or guarantee a fixed number of gigabytes. The result depends on your library and what you actually choose to delete.

Check the official sources

Questions, answered.

Do I need a paid app to delete duplicates?

No. Apple Photos includes duplicate detection and merging. A dedicated app may help with similar shots or a different review workflow.

Which app will free the most space?

That cannot be predicted without reviewing your library. File sizes, iCloud optimization, and the items you choose to remove determine the result.
